CNO – Comment on new psychotherapy document

There is psychotherapy, and then there is the controlled act of psychotherapy. The controlled act is the component of psychotherapy considered to be the highest risk to the client. It does not include all psychotherapy practices.

When the controlled act of psychotherapy becomes law under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991, it will be restricted to a select number of health care professions, including nursing. For this reason, it is important for anyone who practises psychotherapy to know when they are performing the controlled act and when they are not.

To help clarify this difference, five regulatory colleges* whose members will be authorized to perform the controlled act have created a document, Understanding When Psychotherapy is a Controlled Act. We need your feedback to determine if this document clearly explains when psychotherapy becomes a controlled act.

To give your feedback, read the document and complete the survey. If you need more information, watch this accompanying video.
